Hi,
Looks that your idea is genial.
My favorite is Tobacco by Dimityr Dimov and deals with the conflicts and contradictions in Bulgarian society during a period stretching from the early thirties to the end of the Second World War.There is two versions of the book before the communists (the real one) and the second edited by the author to fits the censure. Both are good.
I think you can find it in english.
However i would like to reccomend you as well Time of Violence by Anton Donchev. It is a real and sad story which describes a dark part of the Bolkans history. In the 17th century, a Bulgarian Christian region is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of conversion to Islam. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert.
Hope that I have been useful
